Greater Seattle Surf Soccer is pleased to announce Alan McDonnell as the new Girls Director of Coaching!
The hiring committee was excited to receive an abundance of applicants for the position of Girls Director of Coaching and after several rounds of interviews decided to welcome Alan McDonnell to the Technical Staff. Chris Jones, Club Vice President, has high hopes for Alan, believing that “Alan’s experience, work ethic and ideas about youth development make him an ideal candidate to help grow GS Surf into the best development club in the region.”
There is much enthusiasm around Alan’s addition to the staff, from the Greater Seattle Surf President Sean Hansen himself: “We’re very excited to add Alan’s 30 years of experience to our technical leadership team. His knowledge, commitment, and ambition will have a huge impact on the growth of our players.”
Scott Newman, Technical Director, was very complementary of Alan and how he sees him stepping into his new role. “Alan is going to be one of those Directors that will work extremely hard for the club,” said Scott, “He is very professional in his approach, and will help continue to improve the Girl’s side of Surf. I couldn’t be more pleased to get the opportunity to work with him in this new capacity.”
M’ily Reiter, Girls Associate Director, could only add to the praise: “Alan’s drive and passion, along with his experience, will bring excitement, enthusiasm and energy to Surf. I am excited to work with Alan to see what we can do as a team to continue to create and build the Surf culture and development of our players.”
As for the vision and direction of his new position as the Girl’s Director of Coaching, Alan is ready to get started and make an impact! “I look forward to working with my fellow club directors and coaches in making Greater Seattle Surf a place where our current and future players can learn, grow and develop their skills in a friendly and family environment,” said Alan.
About Alan McDonnell:
Alan joined Greater Seattle Surf during the 2016 season, but has over 30 years of playing and coaching experience and holds a UEFA B license and the NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma. He is also a Qualified and licensed Personal Trainer – holding a National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training with the National Training Centre, Dublin, Ireland (an internationally recognized qualification).
Before joining GSS, Alan was previously a Program Director with Seattle United in 2010-2014 overseeing the Girls and Boys U15-U18 age group and overseeing the U15-U18 seasonal try outs for over 600 players. While coaching at Seattle United Alan managed to get his team to 3 consecutive semi-final games in the Championship State Cup. In his second year, Alan coached the Boys 2000 EPD team that now boasts 8 Seattle Sounder Academy players.
With over 30 years of playing and coaching experience, Alan has coached all levels in the game which includes the University College Dublin Women’s team as well as having many successful years with Wayside Celtic, a club team that has won many league and national titles.
One of the highlights of his coaching career was when he represented his region in the annual Ireland v Scotland representative game on three occasions. While playing for his local club, Dalkey United, his team reached the Cup finals which was played in the famous Dalymount Park. After winning, he was presented with the trophy by Paul McGrath (ex-Manchester United and Irish Captain) who had also played for Dalkey United.
In his free time off the field, Alan likes to watch soccer, go crab fishing, walk his pet Boxer and enjoy the vibrant outdoor life that Washington State provides. He is also a registered volunteer for Special Olympics Ireland.
